Podcasting and Online Radio
In the last lesson at the Web2.0 and Social Media Learning Opportunity at the NLS participants learnt about Podcasting and Online Radio from the Information Management Resource Kit (iMark).
A podcast is an audio file that one can upload on the internet through a website or indeed a blog, where other people can download or listen to at any time they wish to do that, this includes on portable devices like mobile phones and tablets. It was learnt that podcast can be produced as easily. Mobile phones, computers and usually digital recorders can be used to record media which could be in the form of interviews, live broadcasts and other functions.
There may be need to edit some of the recorded files to make them nice for the targeted audience. It must be noted that the recorded media maybe in many formats depending on the equipment used to record it as such it is necessary to put it in formats that are easily played on many players most preferably mp3 format. Once you have created your podcast it is necessary to build your audience by sharing your link to the pod-casts so that people can access them either through pod catchers or rss feeds.
This was another eye opener to all the participants

Web 2.0 and Social Media Training
This week I am at the National Library Service in collaboration with CTA organised, Nicholas Kimolo facilitated workshop where among other things we have learnt how to do advanced searches on the internet, how to curate media that you are interested in using scoopit, how you can get news delivered to you rather than spending time looking for it using feedly how you can do quick survey (most interesting for me) using Google Drive and many other nice things. While many people still struggle keeping their files in many locations participants have been reminded that they can keep they files in the "cloud" using tools like Dropbox. Through skype and hangouts participants learnt that they can hold even video conference calls and make presentations remotely. Participants have also learnt online mapping where one can tag projects and locations as shown here. And hey please fill in this questionnaire on the demand for testing services for Malawi Bureau of Standards Every one seems happy that they are learning new things that they could not imagine that the internet could achieve.
The training was opened by the Chairman of NLS Sheik Chabulika in the presence of the National Librarian and some Board Members.

‘Bingu must blame himself for mass protests’ – PAC
by Nyasa Times
The bad economic and political situation that faces the country affect both common Malawians and politicians alike, therefore president Bingu wa Mutharika and his government must not construe the Wednesday’s mass protest as politically motivated as it is people-driven because the citizenry is disgruntled with the current heavy-handed administration, he Public Affairs Committee (PAC) have said.
“The current regime has to blame itself for failure to listen to the alternative views of the people. While Malawians entrusted the regime with power to govern, they have the right to withdraw if the trust is being abused. This could be in the form of asking the leadership to resign or to call for an early general election,” reads in part the statement signed by Pac’s chairperson Reverend Mac Donald Kadawati made available to Nyasa Times.
Kadawati; Bingu to blame
Kadawati calls upon all Malawians to implement a peaceful demonstration on Wednesday, 20th July, 2011.
“It would be contradictory for PAC to condemn a mass demonstration given that within its mandate the organization is expected to uphold and promote human rights, and a peaceful demonstration is a matter of people’s right.”
But Pac says would like to express its views on the forthcoming national protest.
“As most Malawians remain enthusiastic to implement a national demonstration, we would like to observe that the widely debated national demonstration is a collective effort by various institutions who believe in good governance and wish to see a reverse in dictatorial trends that have gained currency in the present regime ,” reads the statement.
Kadawati further says that various stakeholders have raised concern over the deteriorating developments in our political terrain.
He says: “Several attempts to engage the higher authorities have failed to produce tangible results. Constructive criticisms from the public have faced arrogance and personality attacks without focusing on real issues. This is contrary to the people’s expectation if one looks back when Malawians were fighting for democracy and rule of law,”
The statement stresses that while Malawians have been described as timid , Pac believes that their patience is slowly thinning out as they continue to witness a deliberate disregard to the calls to the regime to uphold the rule of law in this country.
“A part from negative political developments faced by this country , various forms of taxes on basic commodities which are a source of living for common Malawians contradict the very notion of tackling poverty ,” further reads the statement.
PAC says it believes that an economy that takes away from the poor to sustain the few rich is a bad economy no matter how GDP may improve.
“It is being observed that the government continue to interpret the much debated demonstration as being championed by the opposition parties.
As a key institution in governance , PAC says: “Our view is that the present regime continue to lose trust from the public and the trust is no longer sustainable as required by our Republican Constitution.”
“Should people indeed demonstrate, the blame should not shift to other stakeholders, for the regime itself has failed to maintain a sustained trust,” notes Kadawati.
PAC is also calling upon the Malawi Police to provide security to all civilians during the demonstrations irrespective of their affiliation.
“We also ask the Army to be vigilant; because as a people’s army, the Malawi Defence Force have a unique role to protect every Malawian citizen irrespective of their political affiliation, social standing or status in society.”
Malawians are geared to take up to the streets on Wednesday, July 20th to put up a mass protest against President Mutharika’s regime against poor governance, bad economic policies and gross human rights abuses among many others.–(Reporting by Peter Makossah, Nyasa Times)

First Couple Child
The news that the first couple is expecting their first kid has been received with alot of etnusiasm among Malawians.
Others are taunting the president that he is too old to father a kid, they are relating the news to;
The Old Man and the Umbrella joke!
An 80 year old man was having his annual check up and the doctor asked him how he was feeling. "I've never been better!" he boasted. "I've got an eighteen year old bride who's pregnant and having my child! What do you think about that?" The doctor
considered this for a moment, then said, "Let me tell you a story. I knew a guy who was an avid hunter. He never missed a season. But one day went out in a bit of a hurry and he accidentally grabbed his umbrella instead of his gun." The doctor continued, "So he was in the woods and suddenly a grizzly bear appeared in front of him! He raised up his umbrella, pointed it at the bear and squeezed the handle. "And do you know what happened?" the doctor
queried. Dumbfounded, the old man replied "No." The doctor continued, "The bear dropped dead in
front of him!" "That's impossible!" exclaimed the old man. "Someone else must have shot that bear." "That's kind of what I'm getting at..." replied the doctor.
So if the old man didnt kill the bear, who may have done it? Could the impending baby be the reason for the first couple's recent reconciliation and kissing during easter after another rumour had its turns in town that the marriage was on the rocks.
Whatever it comes out to be I would like to convey my congratulatory message to my president for planting the seed in the her excellency the first lady. All the best mai a Chembekezo....
Some those are of the view that at his age he still has some energy to produce even two more kids.

Uncle Monjeza will never learn
U see this guy was in the news for his gay engagement with Aunt Tiwo up to a point of being sentenced to 14 year in the cooler. His conviction held a whole sovereign state that Malawi is at ransom as donors nearly shut down the inflow of their hard earned dollars unless the guy and his homo colleague were released. To the amazement of all who don't know the guy, he engaged to a lady one Doro, a Chirimba prostitute and started a new life buy opening a grocery business using money that was donated by some guy with a fat pocket.
The business seemed not enough to cater for the needs of this normal, turned gay and then normal Monjeza as he was convicted for stealing a USD10 phone and charger. The courts forgave him as a first offender and their relationship with the Doro girl ended because of reasons best known to the two love birds. So another miraculous escape from the cooler.
And now the guy is in the news again for stealing yet another phone.. Its like the guy is in love with phones but he can't just afford one. I am sure this time around the guy will be send to his rightful place as he is now a second offender. It would be nice to visit him one day at the new place which I wish he went to.

World Cup Fever and Injuries
As I flipped through the weekend papers, all of the were awash with world cup stories. In one article the author is arguing that married women need not worry that when their husbands come late from watching these games in pubs because the pubs will have few prostitutes. Reason; they too have trekked down South in search of the Rooney....
But of interest to me is the ever increasing list of superstars who look very likely to miss the world soccer feast due to injuries. Starting with the self afflicted Becks injury during a Milan game through to the Prince Boateng tackle on the injury prone Michael Ballack during the FA Cup final at the Wembley pitch, the list of absentees due to injury looks but growing very rapidly. Rio Ferdinand, Arjen Robben, Mikel Obi, Michael Essien are sure absentees for now.
There is still hope that Martin Skrtel, Diego Forlan, Surrey Muntari, Andrea Pirlo, Harry Kewell, Tim Brown of New Zealand, Humberto Suazo of Chile, Lee-Dong Guk of South Korea, Wilson Palacios, Didier Drogba will recover in time for the games.
For me though, as a Manchester United supporter, I think that there is some hope on us regaining the Premier League crown since most Chelsea players are crocked and will continue to do so because they are ageing and are nearing he end of their playing careers... One man's shit is another one's food huh...
The news that a number of people were injured during a stampede that took place today at a Nigeria friendly is not very welcome.
Good luck to all the teams at the event. MY HEART IS WITH THE AFRICAN TEAMS

Long time no Blog Update
It is indeed a long time that I posted something to this blog. Many things have taken place over the past months most important of all is how happy I am for my dear wife for reasons known to me and her for now..
I attended the African School on Nanoscience for Solar Energy Conversion in Addis Ababa.. The worst journey I have ever travelled. Of course I went thinkning that a visa on arrival will be done in minutes but had to wait for over two hours to get my visa.. Not forgeting the five our delay for a KQ at KIA when leaving and to miss my flight back when heading home at Addis Airport. Maybe this was because of the company of the Embassy Official; Petros and Robbel over a Meta Premium.
During this absence my president got married in a posh wedding in the capital of Malawi. He delayed his honeymoon and now nobody knows his where abouts...

VINCE KUMWENDA: MALAWIAN MEDIA AND THE INTERNET – UPDATE
everal developments have happened since I wrote an article on Malawi media and the internet a few months ago. One notable thing is the improvement of the two popular media houses’ websites.
Zodiak Broadcasting Radio has improved their website and this year Malawians had a rare opportunity of finding the examination results on the internet. The country’s examining body, Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB), does not have a website (or is it that I don’t know about it?) so Zodiak published the results on their site. It was the same with the 2010 University of Malawi Entrance Exams.
This is an update form one Malawian Blogger Vincent Kumwenda.. Posted here without his permission fro GOD'S SAKE...
